5 Signs Your Furnace is Crying Out for Help

Whether you’ve turned on the heat in your home this season or not, here are a few signs that something’s wrong with the furnace.

1. No heat.

Well, this one’s obvious. If the furnace is not producing any heat, check the corresponding circuit breakers and the on/off switches. If the furnace is receiving power but still not giving any heat, then it’s time to call an HVAC professional.

2. Burning or gas odor.

Unfortunately, all of us have to bear the unpleasant odor when a furnace is turned on for the first time in a while. But if the smell continues for an extended period of time and doesn’t seem to go away, then the problem may be the air filter. Simply replace the air filter and you should be good to go. If, however, you smell a burning odor, shut off the system and call an HVAC professional. If you smell gas, then the issue is much more serious and requires the attention of your local fire department.

3. The carbon monoxide alarm goes off.

As you may know, carbon monoxide gas is an odorless, tasteless and colorless byproduct of gas combustion that can be fatal if inhaled. Homes with gas-powered appliances are required to have carbon monoxide detectors and warn occupants of a potential leak. If the alarm goes off, shut off all gas-powered appliances, open doors and windows and leave the home. Call an HVAC professional to test your gas-powered appliances and furnace and identify the cause of the leak.

4. Loud noises.

If the furnace is creating squealing or screeching sounds, then the cause may be a malfunctioning blower motor. If you hear loud pops, or banging or grinding noises, then the furnace definitely needs urgent attention.

5. Constantly running.

If the furnace runs for a few minutes, stops for a few minutes and then turns on again, then you might want to check the air filter and replace it if it’s clogged.
