How To Use Water Filters To Remove Parasites

Water filters remove harmful contaminants from our drinking water, ensuring water is clean and safe to drink. Modern water filtration systems have become increasingly sophisticated, removing everything from bacteria and metals, to toxins and harmful chemicals from our water.

Parasites in Tap Water

But did you know that water filters can also remove parasites? A parasite is any organism that lives inside another organism, called a host. Here are a few types you might find in water.

The cercariae parasite can be contracted after swimming or bathing in contaminated water. This parasite can cause a swimmer’s itch, burning sensation, and schistosomiasis, which is a serious infection that can affect the liver, urinary tract, intestines, and even the brain. Left untreated, schistosomiasis can be fatal.

The cryptosporidium parasite can cause cryptosporidiosis, an intestinal illness that can lead to nausea, cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea. Infection with this parasite may be treated with antibiotics if identified early.

The giardia lamblia is a waterborne parasite that can cause diarrhea, bloating, and abdominal pain. Other types of parasites that can be found in drinking water include roundworms, tapeworms, and amoebae.

Testing Water Supply For Parasites

Local laboratories may offer parasite testing services. Be sure to find out which types of parasites they test for before sending in a sample. Though you can buy a less expensive water test kit on Amazon, most DIY tests aren’t designed to detect parasites in water.

Water Filtration

To minimize your risk of a parasite infection, use an under the sink water filter or a countertop filter. Be sure to use a filter that is rated NSF 53 for parasite removal. Do some research on the different types of water filters designed to remove parasites before making a purchase. And don’t forget to replace the filter at least once every six months.
